2012 is here and MFC is celebrating 26 years in the fin business.
We are very excited about our newest collaboration with Hawaiian Waterman and 2 time Stand Up Paddle World Champion, Kai Lenny.
We’ve known Kai since he was a little kid and we have been supporting him since the early days. A very motivated athlete with a great personality, Kai fits perfectly into the MFC family; his spirit of Aloha and his amazing qualities will definitely make us proud to have him on our team. He is one of the new Hawaiian Water Ambassadors

Legendary Shaper Harold ' Iggy' Ige, who shaped undred and undred boards for Naish, died in the arms of Randy Naish yesterday after a tragic SUP accident on Oahu. Here is Randy's (Robby Naish's brother) own description of the incident as-taken from his Facebook page. May he RIP.

Bad day!
Harold Ige,,,,, shaper, friend, and mentor, died in my arms today,,,,,
We were testing new 18ft sup prototypes,,,, everything was fine,,,,
Harold took a good one,,,, rode it a couple hundred yards.
I was about 50 yards behind,when I whatched him collapse into the water.
I got there as fast as I could.
He'd been under 1 min or maybe 2,,,,,, time gets funny when one is put in this position.
A passing kayak instructor helped out,had a phone on him and called 911.
Kai Santos (good old friend and waterman) saw the pilikia and swam out with fins and together we tried to resuscitate Harold, we were towed in by an instructor from Kailua sailboards and kayaks(. Thanks Leo!) and a C&C lifeguard.
Response time from Honolulu C&C was super,,,,,, when we got to the beach, the ambulance was pulling in.
When I saw Harold go under,,, I knew something was up,,,,very unlike Harold,,,,,,,when he didn't come up after a few seconds,,,,,,,,
I knew something was bad,,,,,,,
We fought hard all the way to the beach to bring him back.
Called out to Harold,,,, God, and anyone else who may have been listening to help us.
I've never felt so helpless!
I did all I could,,,, WE, did all we could
I'm sorry ,,,,
I'll never forget this day even if I want to
The surfing world lost an icon, a legend, and a friend to many, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and,,,, a mentor.

Surf Kid... The Video

Hi there,
the regular winterly weather conditions here in Maui are finally back: NNW swells and light ENE wind.
This morning I was thinking to drive to Peahi (Jaws) to see some tow-in surf and some padlle surf, but it rained so hard last night that my car would not make it down there as the path will be so muddy and slippery.

By the way I will show you the first video of 2012, I hope you like it!

Maui or Gran Canaria?

Dear all,
this year we cannot say that the wind is missing, even today infact a strong north-east wind has blown all day, and - as reported by the iWindsurf graph below - sometimes it seemed to be in Gran Canaria instead of Maui.

I was using the 4.5 Smack 2012 and I must say that it has an incredible range of use (thanks Jeff and HotSailsMaui); even under the most severe and violent gusts this sail is stable, neutral and easy to manoeuvre.

Tomorrow, perhaps, the conditions should change and we hope for less wind and more waves.

The Day After Xmas...

Hi there,

I hope you spent a Happy Christmas.
Personally, I did not go windsurfing yesterday but I went with some friends to South Maui for a long stand up paddle cruising for about 4 hrs. A really nice and relaxed day, we also saw a lot of turtles swimming just beside us... Amanzing...

Today I went back in the water with a new camera mount (Santa gave me for Xmas), and I took some testing-photos; I definitely need to fix it better, but this is it!

HotSails Maui / Kanaha Kai Xmas Dinner

Hi there,
when you go to somebody for a dinner usually goes with something or a gift or food, now, imagine 30 people and all 30 with a different dish .. it is a buffet incredbile.

In addition, each person had to bring a gift (anonymous and impersonal) for the exchange of Christmas gifts.
All this has happened to the Christmas dinner of Hotsails Kanaha Kai Maui and the store here in Maui.
Really thank for a beautiful night with a Dargmar and Bart, and Kyla and Jeff for the hospitality ... and also for gifts.

Maui and friends..

Hi there,
I'm back in Maui after a long work season and finally I met friends with whom I spend most of the time, in and out of the water.
The last 10 days were pretty windy and with a couple of North West/West wave-swells that make this island: magic!
A few days ago, Petra, John and Chico, prepared a delicious dinner for the occasion called Euro dinner, since most of the participants is not living in Maui.

super sunny here in Torbole Lake Garda, with strong north wind.. (good also for the weekend), but for me it's time to start to think about to pack all my stuff and leave for my second home..

Day 1: Sup Days in Lido of Venice..

Hi there,
the working season finally is over and with the shop closed I have more time to go to catch some wind and waves.. last week the forecast for North Adriatic Sea was perfect for surfing, check below:

So in less of few hours I drove from home (Torbole Lake Garda) to Lido of Venice (my second home) .. and waiting some waves with my cousing and some other guys.. (all surfers).

The first day was not so excited: rain, some NE wind and really no nice waves..(this is the panoramic view spot )

But Today, finally the south sweel was perfect.. just for few hours with some off shore breeze..

I'll post the Video for a Day 2.. later..

after one day of demolition and rebuild the walls, finally I begins to see the end of the works, in fact, tomorrow will come another team of workers who will install the last part of the conditioners.

Hopefully for tomorrow evening everything will be done.. (pleasee) so I can start to repair some boards, because until now all repairs are still 1 day left.

SEATEXBOARDS DAY 1: DEMOLITION DAY

Hello all,

and sorry if I do not update the blog often but sometimes I also work ... and here in Torbole the weather in the last two months was not very nice or at least the summer it's not started yet!!!

I think positive so in the next few days I'll install a new sanding room on SEATEXBOARDS and maybe one new Webcam in streaming, will be a nice work when is finished.

The original walls will be removed and a lot of carpenters, electricians and engineers for the air conditioning will work for 12 hrs and we hope to finish everything in 1 or 2 days!!! (i'll posted some photos during the work).

In the meantime I'm trying to organize my next trip to Maui but this year I need a better location so if somebody has a place or Apt or Cottage in Maui, please contact me...

Now I must go... the workers are waiting me.. let's starts with DAY 1 = Demolition Day!!

Update from Maui News:
A Maui man believes he's set a record as the first person to make a solo crossing from the Big Island to Kauai on a stand-up paddleboard.
Bart de Zwart ended his 300-mile journey Sunday night, paddling into Kauai's Kalapaki Beach a few minutes before sunset. A day later, as he relaxed and recovered from the event, he said he felt surprisingly good physically, but reflected that the effort and concentration that went in to surviving alone at sea for five days and nights had been harder than he expected.
"I have to say, I think this is the hardest thing I've ever done in my life," he said Monday. "Just being with the elements for 24 hours for five days - being wet for so many days."
De Zwart, 41, lives in Haiku and owns the Kanaha Kai Maui surf shop. In addition to other ocean sports, he is an experienced sailor who has sailed around the world.
De Zwart said he was inspired to plan the journey by learning about ancient Hawaiian voyagers, who paddled and sailed canoes from island to island and even across the Pacific.
"I also like to do something really hard and challenging," he said. "You appreciate people and life and food and the things around you a lot more."
He began preparing for the trip about six months ago, gathering the gear and safety equipment he would need and modifying a standard paddleboard with changes including a front rudder that would allow him to paddle through strong winds without having to strain himself by paddling only on one side.
After weeks of unusually windy conditions, de Zwart took advantage of a calm period and departed from the Big Island on June 21, launching at 8:30 p.m. in the hope that he could avoid strong daytime winds as he crossed the difficult Alenuihaha Channel.
"It worked, but at night it's also a lot harder, with the cross-chop," he said. "That was one of the harder parts of the trip."
Being unable to see the big swells as he paddled over them through the night also exacerbated a bout of seasickness, he said, which lasted around 24 to 36 hours.
By the next day, he was able to rest and eat as he passed Hana and cruised along Maui's north shore.
De Zwart said he made the decision to navigate to the north of the island chain, hoping that if he got into trouble the winds and ocean currents would blow him toward land - instead of out to sea.
Without a support boat, de Zwart had to be completely self-sufficient.
He packed about 120 pounds of water, food and gear on his board, eating freeze-dried meals he prepared in a special "oven" that used a chemical reaction to create heat. During the day, he snacked on granola bars, nuts, dried fruit, chocolate and sports drinks.
At night he raised navigation lights to avoid collisions with larger boats, then inflated a makeshift bed he had formed by gluing together several inflatable pool mattresses.
They made a comfortable bed, and de Zwart fastened some along the sides to form a "cradle," but he still had a hard time staying dry.
"When it's really rough and the waves start rolling in, then they sometimes pull you over," he said.
Off the coast of Molokai on his second night, de Zwart was washed overboard four times.
He took to sleeping in his wetsuit, and, for safety, he used at least two leashes at all times to keep himself fastened to his board and gear.

NAWILIWILI Kaua'i — The volleyball game kept going. The sun had long unleashed its palette of golden hues. And two ladies, Dagmar and Soleil de Zwart, waited silently.

Wrapped in their own thoughts, the small crowd which had collected around the grassy knoll fronting the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort and Beach Club offered consoling words to try and mask the unchanging scene of an empty beach and ocean.

Bart de Zwart, attempting the first-ever, Big Island-to-Kaua‘i crossing aboard a stand-up paddleboard, alone and unsupported, was supposed to land at 6 p.m., according to Dagmar.

It was now past 6:30 p.m. and there was no word, no phone call. Just the volleyball game that continued at Kalapaki.

“We’re waiting for the guy,” the players said.

Dagmar tapped the keys on the cell phone.

“Five or 10 minutes more,” she said, before diving back into the silence of her thoughts.

Those were agonizing minutes for the mother and daughter of the stand-up paddler from Maui who started “The Ultimate Crossing” Tuesday night from North Kohala on the Big Island, attempting the unprecedented 300-mile journey.

“As the support group began to grow, people kept telling me about the Guinness Record Book,” Dagmar said. “But you need at least two witnesses and Bart is paddling by himself.”

Soleil paced the water’s edge, clutching a teddy bear she had found while waiting the five days, the waves lapping between her toes.

“There he is!” someone shouted.

Flanked by a pair of stand-up paddlers who had gone to the Ninini Point Lighthouse on a practice run, they had run into Bart making his final few yards to Kalapaki Beach.

“We’ve been waiting since before 5,” said Mary and Gary Cate of Kansas City.

“We heard about it on TV and decided we wanted to see this.”

Slowly, the trio made its way to the beach. Dagmar and Soleil were at the head of the crowd which began clapping and heaping congratulations on the solo paddler.

That was 7:20 p.m., just about 10 minutes after making the first sighting.

“Wow! This feels funny,” Bart said after recovering from a small shore break. “People told me about this. I traveled around the world, but I never thought it would feel like this.”

He alternated his body balance between both legs, adjusting to the land after five days and nights on a 14-foot paddleboard.

“He has a lot of respect for the Hawaiian paddling and culture,” Dagmar said. “He always wanted to do this, hoping to retrace routes the Hawaiians used in their simple canoes.”

Bart, the owner of Kanaha Kai Maui surf shop, said he had been planning on this trip for six months.

“The paddling is the easy part,” he said.

“The hard part is being by yourself, eating, sleeping

and how to get around the

islands in the wind and swells.”

He said the trip took more than 215,000 “paddlestrokes.”

“The last few miles was the easy part,” he said. “When I started, the winds and swells kept me down on the board for hours before I was able to stand up and paddle.”

As the crowd waned with the disappearing daylight, Bart got help from spectators in moving his board to the room they were staying at in the Kaua‘i Marriott.

When asked about his future plans, his words were simple: “I don’t have any right now.”

Easter, Work and missing friends (missing post)

after long time I finally have time to post something into this blog.
First of all, I'd like to say Thanks and Hello to all my friends in Maui, expecially to Gary, Alex, John aka Tartaruga, Micah and his family, the beautyful Sarah and all the rest of the Kanaha's Gang.
Really special thanks goes to Jeff, Kyla and Tom for their patience and support in HSM, thanks also to Bart and Dagmar of Kanaha Kai...

Back in Italy in the middle of march, I even met Alex and his family in Venice, which was so nice... spent some hours with them and then back to my family.

The easter time, here in Torbole was really crowed as usual, lots of turists and some nice windy days but for me the water was still too cold (..)

Life is beautiful here... even if it is not Maui.

Still few days left here in Maui, before flying back home.

This post is fully dedicated to the Nomura Family and Kuau Mart Staff.
As I already mentioned (see here), unfortunately it did really happen: the last local Mart place in Paia (and there are not so many other left on Maui...) didn't make it and closed the business on Feb. 25th.

Here some pics of what it looks like now... very sad.

Kanaha SUP 21 Feb. 2k11

Hi there,

in the last ten days there hasn't been so much wind, but at least we could sail for few hours...

The winter time in Maui can be like that, but at the same time it gives us nice good swell hitting the North Shore coast.

Sup cruising and Whales

Like every year, from the beginning of November to the end of February the whales swim through the Hawaiian Islands.
Maui has a perfect natural channel between Molokini and Wailea that is defined "The Highway of Whales"

So yesterday morning early I went to Makena beach with my stand up paddle board and went cruising around looking for some whales.

The short video, (original audio), shows how many there are out there, infact I even had them just underneath my board... it's incredible how such as a large and impressive mammal can camouflage so easily with the color of the sea.

For tomorrow the wind should be back and we might also get some swell...

Maui - Waves and Wind

Hi there,
after returning from Barbados last Saturday, Sunday morning I went out with SUP at Kanaha - good waves, lots of people (as always on Sunday), many friends and a lot of Fun!

Tuesday I had a nice windsurfing Day
Kanaha sometimes surprises me - how can be such bigs waves..? Anyway, in the morning the normal set was mast high, really impressive, especially the white water..
I mounted the GoPro HD camera immediately on the boom.. and I took some funny photos (posted just one below) and a short video..

Many thanks to the lifeguards who rescue about 5/6 guys with mast or parts broken.

Barbados Nice and Smooth

Hi there,
Just arrived two days ago and it looks I've been here forever..
Barbados was one of my best spots some years ago, and I've been here 12 times, starting from 1994 until now.

But I'm so sorry that most of the business around windsurf shut down - places like the Silver Sand Hotel (also the club mistral) is Closed and for sale.

So not so many windsurfers here, also because the mayor flight companies (like British Airways) don't carry any more windsurfing equipment, but a lots of kites.
I went to see my friend brian and the first thing he asked was: there was a big wave a few days ago in jaws? hahahah still a great and positive guy..

We talk for a while .. and hopefully see him again before I leave.

I'm glad to be here because I still love the island, the smell, the weather (really warm), the people make all a difference between here and any other place (maui included).

Kanaha 17 Jan 2k11 - SUP

Hi there,
another day in paradise and another day on the water, no wind but waves, so I woke up at 7am, just a time to wash my face and drove straight to Kanaha Beach Park.
I mounted immediately the GoPro HD on my board, without even looking at the wave conditions and immediately got in the line up .. I received the best welcome as we can see in the picture below
I spent something like 4 hours in the water.. a lot of fun and a lot of friends.. that's why I love this place.

Now it's time to take a rest... ready for tomorrow.

GoPro Back on my Boom

finally today I managed to put on the boom the GoPro camera, the wind was blowing from Est - North Est and the waves were good enought to try to film some moment.
I still have to choose where to put the camera on the boom or on the mast but in the next days I will try the various solutions.

Swell, Sup and Shark!

Hi there
in the last week I had a good sessions in stand up paddle.
Me and all my friends were in Kanaha and Lanes with nice swell from North-North Est, still no photos because I need to set up my GoPro Camera on the board. (just fixed)
Meantime yesterday in the Harbor a 16 year-old body boarder was bitten in two passes by a shark.
The boy suffered lacerations to his left lower left leg, calf, foot and ankle area was bitten..

No other news about the poor guy.. hopefully he will be fine..

Today looks some north wind light and cloudy so it's time to relax and enjoy the island

SUP Lanes 17 dec 2010

Hi there,
Today together with Gary "Mr. Rat Shit" we went out at Lanes.
Lanes is located to the left side of Hookipa, and fortunately there were only few stand ups and one surfer – instead of Hookipa where at 7.30am it was already full of people.

TThe waves were not very nice but we had a great time especially because thanks the lack of wind we could clearly see the bottom of the sea and sometimes was pretty impressive to me, this is a small photographic guide.
As soon as my board will be fixed, I may finally install the GoPro Hd and make some nice shots from the water

Hi there,
this morning Mr. Gary alias "RaaatShiiit" woke me up at 7am.

" Hello... wake up Sand Piles is not so bad for stand up..." in the last few days I was sailing a little bit at Kanaha with some strong wind and no waves so this call was unexpected; but the EAST swell and few Wind created a good condition.

In 20 min. right passed the harbor, I saw the waves... see a short photo report of today. For me it was the first time again on SUP in Maui after 8months, I need to exercise more... enjoy!

Welcome To Maui. Back in my second Home

YES!!

finally I'm back... after 8 months I'm in Maui again.

I'll not talk too much about the travel as it was like a nightmare... blocked in London from immigration security, change two airplanes for technical problems in Los Angeles and when finally I landed in Maui around 11pm the van wasn't running!

Arriving the day before Thanksgiving it's funny... everybody crazy about two things: buy a Turckey for lunch/dinner and look for the best Black Friday sales!
(don't know what Black Friday is see here)

I finally went to visit some friends, first stop at Ross House, in Camp One, coffeee and a lot of laughing...

Next stop thanksgiving lunch with Jeff and Kyla's family and Dagmar... WOW!!! thanks a lot was like be a part of the family

Breathing the fresh salty air makes me happy and after a small sailing session in kanaha with 4.3 I feel extremely better!

the evening was so fast and with the jetlag help I was exausted...

The season is going Off..

Dear All,
The season is about to end, the last work day will be Nov. 10th.!!!
It has been long, hard and very busy so now I'm ready to take a rest and time to relax...

I'm leaving end of November for my winter holiday: same place as usual, same new sails and same boards... but this winter I'll have to test my new line of Paddles in all kind of conditions (expecially some fully carbon Vario, and Fiber... ), so I'm planning to ship some of them directly from China. Below some photos:

Then perharps there's a chance I'll get to work onsite... I'll update you when things are taking shape! (keeping fingers crossed).

Now it's time to go back to work, still some more boards to fix...

Official Statement: HONOLULU - (November 2, 2010) -- The world of surfing mourns an incredibly sad loss today with the news that Hawaii's Andy Irons has died. Andy was a beloved husband, and a true champion. Irons, 32,withdrew from a professional surfing event in Puerto Rico last weekend due to illness and passed away during a layover en-route to his home in Kauai, Hawaii. He had reportedly been battling with dengue fever, a viral disease. At this time the family thanks his friends and fans for their support,and asks that the community respect its privacy. The family also asks to not be contacted so their focus can remain on one another during this time of profound loss.

It is with deep sadness that Billabong has learned of the news of Andy Irons’ passing. Andy was one of the greatest surfers of our time. More than that, he was a much loved son, a devoted husband and a soon-to-be father. The thoughts of all Billabong employees worldwide are with wife Lyndie and Andy’s family at this most devastating time.

Back in the water - SUP

Hi there
finally last Tuesday, I went in the water again.
The forecast was south wind and south swell in Adriatic sea, so I left from Torbole Monday morning, pass by to my family, and arrived in Lido di Venezia to my cousin in the night.

Tuesday morning we woke up at 7am and drive straight to the beach.. some wind was blowing the coast, not too strong for windsurfing, not for kiting but too strong for surfing..

So we move to another beach and try to catch some waves.

After pass one hour in the water we just catch a couple of waves each..because the current was too strong and really messy waves.

A little bit sad we move to another beach but before we stops for a short break lunch!!

Around 1pm we arrived to Paciuka beach, located at NorthWest part of Lido di Venezia .. and..

WOW, nice huge and clean barrels, no wind, sunny and warm.. unbelievable..
we ran in the water.. and we stay until all every single muscles was dead.. around 4pm..

Arrived at home, washed the equipment and took a shower.. slept for two hrs..and around the 7pm with a speedy boat we arrive in Venice for a dinner.. what's a beautiful day!!!!

An special thanks to Shaka surf Shop for a Sup board, Seatexboards for Paddles and Al Cason for the support..

Meeting Hot Sails Maui

For a welcome dinner we were up to Monte Velo, nice place and good local food!!!

All about my summer...

at least, after some months of absence, I found the time to write on this blog and I hope to continue updating it.
Another summer is almost over and it has been the best season of all-time for my job. I've been working hard even 12 hours a day and 7 days a week but it's finally close over.

Coast To Coast - SUP Club Torbole

Hi there,
Here at Lake Garda the season hasn't started yet, still chilly and cold water (13° C).
Yesterday was a calm day, so my cousin came to visit me from my hometown Venice and joined me for a Stand Up Paddle session - Coast to Coast.
We left Conca d'Oro in Torbole around 1 pm and crossed the lake towards the western coast.

After just 50 minutes we were on the other side of the lake... our feets were frozen and we decided to stop for few minutes, on the veranda of Ristorante Casa della Trota, which is closed since a very long time.

Then we explored the cave just beside the resturant, and we found a nice and SUPER COLD waterfall... below the small video.

Suddendly just when we decided to come back a strong gusty north wind started to blow and made our cruise very hard, completely against the wind...

Thanks to Shaka Surf Center , and Sup Club Torbole for the SUPs and the paddles!!!

SUP - Downwind with South Wind

Hi there,
sorry for the long time without posting but I already started to work and don't have so much time for all.

Last friday I went to Malcesine, small town in the middle part of lake Garda, and on a Naish 12' Stand Up Paddle I did the Downwind from there to Torbole.

Thanks to a friend that gave me a ride with a big van and Fabio the photographer (fotofiore.com) that followed me with a moped doing a nice photoshoot from the mountain.

I can't show you all the nice photos because they will be posted in one of the first magazine of Stand up Paddle here in italy.

Just a small previewof this fantastic experience... 11 km about 7 miles of pure downwind in only 2hours.

Thanks to Shaka Surf Shop to borrow me the board and the paddle.

Wind of March: Ora

Hi there,

Here in Lake Garda it's time for South Wind (locally called "ORA").
This kind of wind comes from the South blowing straight to the Northern part of the lake.

As Torbole is located on the top part of it, this is a very good time for windsurfing...!
Normally the "Ora" blows from noon till late afternoon, every day from march to october.
Today some pleople were in the water with slalom boards and some others with freestyle boards.

Back in Torbole Lake Garda

Hi there,
One week ago I left Maui to come back here in Torbole Lake Garda, my hometown!
The weather is completly different comparing to Maui, but I'm glad to be home and see my friends, my parents and especially my cat: Pedro.

In the last days it was even snowing here downtown... but luckily just for few hours.

My Shop is OPEN starting from today Sunday 14 March for the season 2010.
The blog will stay on line but with less updates until spring comes, keep in touch.

Day 75 - The End... with small Surprise

that's it! I'm almost on the way to go home.
The schedule is pretty long but I'm happy to go back for my parents, my cat and of course my friends.
I'd like to say all my friends in Maui that I'll miss them and I hope to see again soon in November... but now it's time for me to go back to work.

Tsunami Update - Cancelled

Hi there,
The Civil defense officials reported the tsunami warning for Hawaii was canceled shortly before 1:45 p.m. Saturday.
The state's highest wave was reported at Kahului Harbor, measuring 3.2 feet.

There were no immediate reports of damage from the multiple surges that rolled into Maui County shorelines around noon.
Ocean users were warned to avoid entering the water in the following areas due to possible sewage contamination: the north shore, from Kuau to Waiehu; the south shore from Wailea to Sugar Beach; and West Maui from Puamana to Kapalua.
Maui County officials were restarting water and sewer facilities that had been shut down in low-lying areas ahead of the tsunami. They said residents would be able to resume their use of water and sewer services around 3 p.m., once the facilities were fully operational, but should continue to limit use until then.
Residents were also asked to continue conserving electricity until 4 p.m., while Maui Electric Company brings its Kahului power station back online.
Coastal roads, including the Kahului Airport access road, were reopened as of 1:50 p.m., and the Maui Bus was resuming regular service.
County spokeswoman Mahina Martin said flights out of Kahului Airport were reported to be back on schedule, after several flights were delayed earlier in the day.
Makena State Park and Ahihi Kinau Natural Area Reserve remained closed; however, Wainapanapa State Park in Hana was reopened.
County beach parks remained closed until officials could make an assessment of conditions, Martin said.
Waiehu Municipal Golf Course was scheduled to reopen on Sunday.
All landfills on Maui remained closed Saturday, while landfills on Molokai and Lanai were open.
At lookouts in Wailuku, observers could see the water level dropping in Kahului Harbor, followed by a surge that sent a line of whitewater up the harbor beach. A cloud of silt was visible in the harbor and grew larger with the subsequent surges, and observers saw choppy "boiling" water near the harbor mouth.

Day 73 - Windy @ Kanaha, and Video

Hi there,
yesterday at Kanaha for some reason from 11am to noon there were only the 2 of us, maybe because all the people tried to go out at Hookipa, anyway... i prefer smaller waves but being alone, that fight with everyone to catch one wave.
Some sets were head high and the wind for 5.0 just made it one of the most beautiful day!
Me and Gary (Rat Shit) had all the waves just for us, so nice and cool... i'll never forget!

Happy Birthday Chico!!!

Ooooh yes...
Yestarday we went in Haiku to celebrate Chico's Birthday!!
The whole Kanaha's Gang's was there and we enjoyed a delicious food, wine and Petsch's special cocktail Martini-Lime.
Guest star of the party: Gary "rat shit" that played guitar and sang for us together with John and the other friends!!

Day 71 - SUP - Whale watch experience and Shark "Tony" Tiger ...

Hi everybody,
Yesterday at 6.30am I went to Kanaha to stand up paddle for about 3 hours... such a beautiful day with glassy waves and total lack of wind, even not so many people for a while!
Below a couple of photos:

In the afternoon we reached our friends who have invited us on a boat trip, for some whale watching and sunset in the south part of the island. A wonderful experience, on the "Alii Nui" catamaran, a brand new boat with a great staff and delicious food (have a look here). Special thanks to Daniel and Manuela of Hawaiiactive

Just coming down from the boat I heard about that a shark attacked a turtle in Hookipa, this is the original article of MauiNews today:

PAIA -- A sighting of an approximately 12-foot-long tiger shark led Maui County officials to close waters off Hookipa Beach Park for about two hours on Monday.
The shark was spotted at 11:15 a.m., about 150 yards from the surf break at Hookipa, said Mary Kielty, chief of the Department of Parks and Recreation's Aquatics Division.

The closure affected waters one mile in either direction of where the shark was seen. The beach park remained open. Signs were posted to warn people to stay out of the water.
Ocean access was reopened around 1:30 p.m. No injuries were reported. (except the Turtle, NDR).

Day 69 - Jump Around - Jump Around...

Hi there,
when the forecast says something... not all the times is right!
For today there should have been no wind and big waves... and we got big waves and also some trade wind.
I went to Kanaha at 6.30 with my SUP-buddy Gary, and immediatly we realized that the swell was alredy there!
We stayed in the water for about 3 hrs, and we kept some power for tomorrow that should be the best day!

I took also some pics about my new move: Stand up Paddle high jump :-)))

Day 67 - Points of view..

Hi there,
Yesterday I spent all day around the island to look for some wind: kanaha, kihei, Maalaea, Kanaha again... but nothing, the wind from NE was not enough even to slog.
Instead, this morning at 6.30 the anemometer of the airport was already giving 10 knots from East. So I went in the water around 11am, just to try the GoPro HD camera that I fixed on the nose of my windsurf board... below some pictures

In the afternoon I got the call from Jeff Henderson, so I went to his house to do a photoshooting for HotSailsMaui... nice and a lot of fun, Thanks Jeff.
I also took this video posted in Jeff's Blog... I hope you like it!

The wind forecasts for the next days are bad but a big swell is coming from North starting tomorrow... so in the next days it's Stand Up time!

Day 65 - On Shore wind and cold...

Hi there,
this morning the wind was blowing straight from North, infact in Kanaha the conditions was really crappy, furthermore was also cold. The maximum temperature has been 24 degrees Celsius, but the feeling with the cold wind was like 18C.

Anyway the waves were pretty big (logo high) but so messy. I sailed for an hour and these are some pictures... tomorrow we should have a better wind direction.

Day 64 - Still some Waves @ Kanaha!

The forecast for today gives finally some wind from north/north-east, with a new swell coming tomorrow.
But yesterday I had one of the best day on stand up paddle with Glassy water, No wind, Whales close to the line up, Dolphins... all this is Maui.

I recorded a small video of yesterday...thanks to Alex to share the last wave!!!

Day 63 - Sup @ Kanaha and some windsurfing..

Hi there,
the last two days the wind conditions have not changed much, and both yesterday and today I went to Kanaha with my SUP.
Unfortunately I have no pictures and video of yesterday, because the battery died again... but today - after having recharged it a whole night - it worked.
The waves were about head high, but sometimes there were even bigger sets... It's a pity that the wind already blew early in the morning from North, making paddling harder.
Note: when I went in the water I saw a guy on a SUP which was really good and when I got to the line up, he gave me the way on the first wave. It was Mr. Dave Kalama in person!!! You can see me thanking him with a shaka on the video

In the afternoon the wind picked up a little more, so I tried to sail with a 5.0 on 81 litres... I slogged for a while, got a couple of waves... and came back.

Tomorrow the forecast says: No wind!... we'll see.

Day 61 - SUP @ Woodys

Hi there,

As already mentioned yesterday, this morning at 6.30 Gary called me to go to Stand Up Paddle in Lahaina...
After few minutes he was already outside of my door... " go...come out...it's time to go!"... I jumped in his car and a nice coffee with biscuits were waiting for me in the dashboard, wonderful breakfast.
Around 7.10am we were already in Woodys, (few miles before Lahaina), and beautiful waves were there as expected.

We surfed a couple of hours and then some south wind started to blow, so we decided to drive to Lahaina and take another coffee and a pastry.
It is raining in maui now!

Hi there,
in the last three days here in Maui the trade wind has been blowing from North - North East, and yestarday some big waves crashed on the North Coast.

The wind was light and waves still small. I took one day off and... enojoy the beach.

11 Feb. 2010
Still light wind and some nice waves in Kanaha for a perfect evening session.

12 Feb. 2010
Windy Kanaha for 5.0 to 4.7 sail and big waves (logo high and mast high). A little bit too crowded, but after 4pm was nice again...

Tomorrow, I'll go Stand Up Paddle in the early morning.

Day 57 - Hookipa sailing...

Hi there,

The wind here is blowing since yesterday... but still no waves infact today, to get them, I went out at Hookipa around 11.30am.

Some surfers were still in the water and me with other guys had to wait a bit untill the Lifeguard gave us the sign to GOOOOO!!!

The wind from East - North-East and sometimes South-Est made the things more difficult, furthermore inside the bay there was really Zero wind and outside I was overpowered with the 5.0... anyway, here are some pictures of today I hope you like them.

For tomorrow the forecast gives the same conditions... We'll see where to go out!

Day 55 - Great SUP day and First Friday

Hi there,
Sunny weather and no wind, make the perfect condition for a Sup session in Kanaha.
Gary and me stayed 6 hrs in the water from 7.30 till 1.30pm, I also put the GoPro HD on my board but did'nt get any good shots as the battey left me right at the beginning.

After a small rest, at 5pm we decided to go to Wailuku for the First Friday Night, where a lot of different bands, food makers and local manufacturers sell theyr products while people hang out and dance on the street. Unfortunately this happens only every first friday of the month. Below a couple of pictures and a small video...

Day 54 - Not Normal day...

Hi there,
Yesterday morning I believe a small Angel was beside me...
After breakfast and some work I decided to take the car, as usual, and to go to the beach. I was able to drive for about 1km outside the property and right after the speed bump... BOOOOOMMMMMM
The car bended all the way to the right, pulling me out the road scratsching on the asphalt!
I thought I lost a tire... Thank the angel I was not driving fast on the highway which I was about to take!!

This is a small video I hope it can be fixed.

Day 53 - Back in Maui and back in the Water..

Hi there,
I left Barbados last Monday afternoon and landed about 4hrs later in NYC... I always love NYC... but when I came out the airport to go to the hotel

WWWWOOOOWWWWW

he temperature was -7 degress celsius, (20 Fahrenheit) so cold that I couldn't even do one step more. Can you imagine switch from 32 to -7 degrees...?

Anyway after that... I arrived tuesday evening back again to Maui, rain and low temperature... were waiting for me. What the hell!!?????
Today, wendsday finally some wind is blowing again, from North - North Est, not so strong infact I used my 5.0smack and most of the time I wasn't not planing at all but always better than nothing.

One new swell will arrive next week so for sure we'll have some big waves (period 16sec.) everything is ready, windsurfing gear and paddle board, in case no wind.

Web surfing over 38000 feet

Hi there,
I'm writing this post at the altitude of over 38000 Feet, infact I'm flying from NYC to Los Angels....
This Boeing of American Airlines has finally a WiFi connection, and costs only 4.95$ for 3 Hrs.

Not too bad though... the only problem is the power... I'd need now to plug my MacbookPro but where?

Day 51 - 2 - East Coast - North Point and pilot a Concorde

During the way back I stopped at the Concorde Experience Museum, just beside the International Airport. A nice and really interesting tour. Especially when I realized that this supersonic airline idea started already in 1956, then only in 1976 Air France and British Airways began their flight with passengers, after about 7 years long being tested without seats.

It's nice to see how the cabin is inside and how small all the airplane is... during the visit I even tryed to pilot the Concorde... hhmmm during the flight was not soo difficult but... by the time I had to land in Barbados... well this is the result!

Monday I'll flight back to Maui, with one overnight to NYC...

Day 51 - 1 - East Coast - North Point and pilot a Concorde

Hi there,
this morning I drove to the East coast to see one of the best part of the island of Barbados.
There are a lot of trees (coconut and bananas), plants, and the vegetation grows everywhere. If you want to visit this place take a small map with you, as there are many roads, but only 2 of them come to the right place.

After a small lunch I went to visit North Point, where the ocean swell meets the coast after thousand and thousand miles.

Nice view and nice coffee shop literally covered by Business cards glued on the walls... (I can't even find my old one... so I put another one. In case you would come here... check it out!).

Day 50 - Dinner to Chicken Rita

last night I went with some friends to one of the best places (well... not for the environment...) where to eat chicken here in Barbados: Chicken Rita's.

She cooks the chicken with some spices and herbs inside, boiled and then fried at the end... really good and tasty.

Day 49 - Bridgetown and southeaster Coast

Hi there,

in this "holiday inside the holiday", the wind is never missing, blowing every day between 20 and 25 knots, but I'm here just to relax and organize everything for the new work season, which will start on March 10.
Many news this year at SEATEXBOARDS, new parthernships and much more... reveal in few weeks!
A slight cold yesterday kept me at home to work, but in the afternoon, I managed to swim at Miami Beach: here a small video. It's incredible how clean, transparent, turquoise and warm is the water here in Barbados

Today morning I spent most of the time around the capital Bridgetown and in the afteroon I went to the southeastern coast.

Day 47 - Barbados Action...

Hi there,
today a very good wind was blowing on Barbados and that's the reason I cruised around to visit Silver Sand and Silver Rock. Here I met a old friend who showed me his "deAction" center, nice and really "busy"...
After a pleasant conversation I walked along the beach towards the Mistral Club located at Silver Sand. Things never change here, but a lot less people than few years ago. Especially windsurfers - infact it was packed of kiters.

Day 46 - Welcome to Barbados - West Indies

Hi there,
finally after 4 years I'm back in Barbados, West Indies, a nice and warm place.
I flow from Kahului to Bridgetown Barbados, via Los Angeles - Dallas Forth Worth and Miami,

special thanks go to Claudia, Maurizio and Rosy for coming to pick me up at the Airport at 1am.
Anyway... today short visit to Maurizio at the Suf Center in Ocean Spray.

after small lunch with ocean view now I'll go to jump in the water in Miami Beach... such a nice place.

Life is beautiful also in Barbados.

Day 44 - SUP and Flight to Barbados

This morning I had a great SUP sesssion in Kanaha, with Gary and Matteo,
waves were about head high with no wind.
I used for the first time the GoPro HD on the nose of my Stand up board.. here some pics.

Tonight ( in 2 hrs) I will leave for Barbados, small trip (7 days) to visits some good friends and enjoy the island.

Day 42 - Sup in Kanaha...

Hi there,

after the windsurfing day of yesterday (see here) today I had a great SUP day.
Woke up at 7.00am (too late I know, but all my body hurts a lot after 5 hrs sailing), small breakfast, check the waves on internet and drove straight to Kanaha.
Matteo was already there, to set his GoPro HD up on the nose of his board, so I decided to fix my GoPro on the paddle directly.
I stayed in the water about 4hrs long and this is the first selection of today, plus a small video...
Tomorrow promise I'll post a second selection of pictures.

Day 41 - Epic Day..

Hi there,
today was an epic day with strong wind (11am with 38 knots) and logo to logo high waves, sometimes mast high.
First I tryed with 5.0 but then I switched to 4.5... on my 80 liters board.
Less words and more pictures for this post... i'm really too tired.. sorry about it, but tomorrow I'll give you a surprise...

Day 40 - Another Crazy day...

Hi there,
Last night the wind blew constantly until this morning, at 7am there was really NO WIND... zero, nada, niente... and super sunny... not even one cloud.
But the forecasts for today gave strong winds of 23-25 knots from N/NE. That's why I've been all day at the beach waiting... but nothing.

Around 2pm something was change... big clouds arrived from North - North East and after few minutes the wind picked up... and everyone at the beach went in the water. I was with the 5,0 - waves were really messy and not so big.

At the begining it was really light and after about 40 minutes it dropped down so I came back to the beach.

Then at 4 pm another stormy wind picked up and this time was much stronger, infact many people were using 4.5 - 4.7 sails.

At 5 oclock I was very tired - time to go home!!

Day 38 - Harbor with star guest..

Hi there,
Wake up call at 6.30 am, like every morning... I've got the sms from Gary: 7.30am @ Kanaha, just the time to take a small breakfast and I'm driving there.
Forecast for today are similar to those of yesterday, so the waves will probably be the same. On the way I call Alex that was driving to the Harbor to see how the the waves are over there.

Some minutes later we are all in Kanaha Beach looking at the waves, so big, huge and sometime messy... then we decide to go to the Harbor were Alex says it's better and more fun.

We spend something like 4 hrs in the water, and just when we are ready to go again in the water for the afternoon session the GG (Good Girls) come out saying that there is a shark just outside the buoy... shark? in the Harbor? ... no way...it's impossible.
just few seconds later another girl comes out of the water saying the same thing... there's a shark close to the buoy... (normally the buoy it's right where the break point)
Anyway we went in the water but all the time with one eye checking the waves and the other one checking the shark.

Day 37 - Wait a minute...

Hi there,
yesterday was perhaps one of the most beautiful days I ever lived here on Maui. I woke up at 7am with the usual message of Gary: K - NOW! (Kanaha NOW). When I arrived at the beach around 7:30am there were already plenty of people .. with both the SUP and short board.From the beach, the waves did not seem so big and maybe this was one of the reasons that convinced me to go out ...

but as I left and I approached the line of the break point, I realized that maybe I was completely wrong in judging the sizes of the waves. As soon as I reached the break point I was able to ride a nice wave. It was about head high; I was so happy to catch the right wave...WOW...After I returned to the break point I saw Gary and he told me that we should go somewhere else. We paddled down in front of Kite Beach where all the other guys with the SUP and a perfect right wave were!
I stayed there until 9.30 am when all of the sudden a set much bigger appeared on the horizon (the forecast was increasing waves during the morning). I decided to paddle out and hope it would not be too big. Gary got the first and I got the second one. I am pretty sure that it was logo high. After a few turns in the wave, the white water completely covered me with the power of the wave..
I was tumbled in the wave for several seconds and the leash of the board continued to pull on my leg. It was impossible to get back to the surface. I spent 2-3 minutes of hell; After a short breath I was swallowing more water and felt like this would never end.
After the set had passed I thought it was maybe better to return to the beach and hang the SUP on the nail.

But, wait a minute, instead I returned to the break point and I continued to take wave after wave until it was already 10.20am . I was exhausted when I returned to the beach. I took a shower, had some breakfast, went home and slept all afternoon (beside watching a football game).

Day 36 - Light Trade Wind are Back!

Hi there,

yes...Finally after six weeks, some trade wind was blowing over the North Coast of Maui.
The wind was really light, so I used my bigger sail 5.0 Smack. Unfortunately it wasn't enough for planing but perfect for some wave riding. I stayed a bit longer in the water: 2 sessions, 2 hours each!
My foot hurts a little bit more now but I think that it will be ok in a couple of days.

Forecast: next days still some light trade wind will blowing and from sunday another swell coming!

Day 34 - Harbor - Birthday - Infection and Donation!

Hi there,
these four words are the summary of my last 2 days.

Harbor - Still with no wind and messy waves at Kanaha, I preferred to go with the paddle to the harbor where, even if the waves were smaller, I've had a good time.

Day 32 - Sup - Windsurf - Sunset

Hi there,

yesterday I went in the Harbor late this morning and met Alex, Gary and Matteo. The waves were not soo bad but it was difficult to paddle and pass the crashing waves as some north wind was blowing against us inside the bay.

After 2pm Nadia and Lara came by with the idea to go windsurfing on the other side of the island.
They drove over there and at Kahana Beach / Napili the wind and the waves were good enought to go... so Nadia went out right away and Lara took some pics.

Also Glenn and Giampaolo were there..

Sunset:
Driving back from the windsurfing spot "the girls" stopped at Lahaina Harbor for some fast shopping and made some nice sunset pictures.

Day 31 - Cruising Kanaha... and nice afternoon session

Hi there,
this morning I went to Kanaha Beach around 9.00am and tried together with Alex and Matteo to go out with Sup, but too much Kona wind was blowing.
So we changed our plan and decided for a downwind to Camp One at Ross's house...

When we arrived there, Ross was watching the Football game, so he gave us some water and we paddled back to Kanaha...

Around 2.30pm the wind stopped so we went back again in the water and for almost one hour was incredible: nice waves, glossy and perfect... maybe too many people, but still a lot of fun.

For tomorrow the forecast gives some Trade wind and also Jaws will break

Day 30 - Back in the Water - Harbor

Hi there,
finally today I could get into the water again, because in the last days my foot was still hurting.
So I went in the harbor early in the morning which at 7.30am was already full of people.
The waves were beautiful and clean, then in the late morning a light breeze was botheing a bit.
I had a nice funny session with my friend Gary, Alex and Matteo also Lara went in the water with a surfboard...

Around noon I went to Kanaha to see if the south wind was enough to windsurf but too many surfers in the line up made me stay on the beach to rest.
Tomorrow the weather will be pretty the same of today, therefore wakeup call at 6.30am.

Day 29 - No wind, but Waves = Harbor

Hey there,
Here again the trade wind doesn't want to show up ... so I have nothing else to do than go out surfing or better SUP surfing (stand up paddle).
Today although my foot is still not healed, (I maybe got an infection from staph), I went to look the harbor. The wave was not too bad so tomorrow morning the appointment is at 6.30am, with Alex, Gary and Matteo and I will use the Naish SUP 9'6 that I borrowed. We are ready with sport cameras, so I hope to be able to shot some pics even from the water.

Day 29 - Kona wind - kanaha and Lanes

Hi there,
today I had a short windsurfing session in Kanaha Beach, with 5.0 Smack 2010 and 99CustomBoards 81 litres, from 11.30am for two hours.
The waves had a nice shape and a good size, almost overhead- logohigh, but the wind was really off shore...
I had one of my best bottom turns and cuts back ever... but I'm sad because nobody took some photos to show!

Day 28 - Kona "crazy" Wind..

Hi there,
Also today we had south wind, much stronger than yesterday and a lot gusty. I was probably in the I wrong spot - Kanaha beach - for sure Lanes would have been much better with light and constant wind.
After two hours I decided to go there, but I received a call from a friend who warned me about a serious car accident in Paia that caused a lot of traffic jam as they closed the main road on the coast. Therefore i stayed at Kanaha.

Even today the wind is blowing from the south, I will see where to go. Some waves are definitely arriving in the early afternoon.

Day 27 - Finally some Wind.... Kona!

Hi there,
this morning when I woke up the south wind (kona) was strong enough so I immediately drove to Kanaha Beach Park.

After having all rigged, the wind died so I didn't even wet my feet.
I decided at this point to drive to Kihei on the south coast of the island, where the south wind always blows stronger but again I was so disappointed to see that the few windsurfer in the water were barely able to move...

After a quick stop at Foodland for a delicious and fresh sushi, around 1pm I decided to come back to Kanaha and was surprised to see... finally wind!

Okay the waves were not great and the wind was gusty but at least for today I could go windsurfing.
Now it's 8pm and I'm ready to go sleep!!

Day 25 - Happy New 2k10

Hi there,
first of all I like to wish you a Happy New Year 2010.
Personally, I greeted the 2009 and early 2010 with a bad cold and sick, which forced me to restrict the New Year Party celebration.

Forecasts for the first days of January are not very different from the last 20 days, perhaps there is a possibility to go for a windsurfing session on Sunday / Monday with the Kona wind and on 7-8 January with the trade wind...
Instead there will be waves from the beginning of the week (Monday) with a new swell coming that will have its maximum for the days 6 / 7 January.

I'll see what happens... now I make another ginger tea to defeat this cold, Special thanks yvonne!

Day 23 - Looking for a paddle board

Hi there,
now I believe that the trade wind for this year will not blow anymore, so I decided to devote myself to paddle board. The problem now is to find a board.
In the last days I have tried plenty and the one I like the most is the Naish 9'6".

I was hoping to find a used one on Craig's List or in the stores here on the island, but nobody has a paddle to sell, they prefer to rent it rather than to sell it. If you read this post and you have a paddle board on sale please contact me here
